We are open for visitors – to get a tour, camp or to stay in the straw bale guest room as mini associates of the project!
We are a small intentional eco community living in the view of the Serra da Gardunha mountains in the district of Fundao. We have been practicing permaculture and off grid living in this land since 2006. At the project, which is a ‘not-for-profit’ association, we host and run a variety of educational workshops and courses designed to promote a more natural and simple way of life.
If you are interested in coming to stay we have the option of sleeping in our straw bale guest room which has a double bed, baby cot and option for a child’s bed.
We also offer space for those travelling with a caravan or small van.
Here is the booking form
And here is the price list for our Associates.
We have a camping kitchen with a gas stove where you can make your own food.
If you are the more adventurous kind we also have a “wild life corridor” where we will allow temporary wild camping, with safe facilities for cooking with fire and a “shit pit” for a toilet. Electric devices and cars/motorhomes are not alllowed in this area, and water have to be carried.
We are living off grid, so you will get the chance to try your hand at living without mains electric while you are here! Our solar system in the central area allow us the possibility of light and charging a few items where required.
We seek to allow visitors an opportunity to live close to nature, and yet have a safe experience. It is as close to ‘wild camping’ as possible. Whether swimming in the pond, using our compost toilets, outdoor shower, or cooking with fire, the Mount of Oaks provides a base to come back to yourself in the heart of nature.
Our location is a 20 min walk from the nearest village, Povoa de Atalaia, where Maria has a little supermarket to buy essentials, and you can eat in local cafes or restaurants if you prefer.
We stock some local produce and basic natural items if you are in need.
In any season there are plenty of things going on in the local area and you can make the Mount of Oaks your base for exploring the region.
Check out the nearest historic villages of Castelo Novo and Alpedrinha, or a little further the village of Monsanto.
